Dunno for sure, but I've been looking all over the place for a nice 4arm ring for my own steed, that site's really handy.

The good thing about the thorn rings is that when they wear you can turn them round and start again

and for about £20 I think I might add one to my bike

    • I have ordered one so I will let you know what I think of it when it comes

I have also ordered a new surly single speed cog and a new KMC single speed chain

    Hi,

I've got one on. Seems pretty good so far.  Much thicker than a normal 9 speed ring so moves your chainline slightly.  Runs a lot quieter than the 9 speed ring I had on before (although that wasn't exactly new...)

    Re: Thorn single chainrings

I like Blackspire DH rings. Just bought a couple of Surly stainless steel rings, but haven't fitted them yet. These look like they should last for years.

Here's a good tip:  Use road cranks on your SS mtb, fitted with 39, 38 or 40T rings - to go with 18, 19 or 20T rear sprockets. Standard inner road rings are not chamfered, ramped or pinned, so work very well for SS and are cheap/plentiful. The bigger ring and sprocket combination seems to run quieter, and allows finer tuning of the gear. It will obviously wear less quickly. Most aftermarket ring manufactureers, such as Stronglight and TA, make 130 BCD rings in 38, 39 and 40. My best SS mtb is geared 39-19 and it works really well. However, some frames will be too wide at the stays to accommodate such a big ring unless you use a wide BB, which will spoil the Q-factor.

The thing I like about the Thorn ring is their reverseabiliy

    Re: Thorn single chainrings

You should be able to reverse pretty much any chainring when SS'ing - not just the Thorn.

And, Robin Thorn is a top chap. Really knows his bikes and supplies some great stuff. Very good beard, too!

I popped into their shop in Bridgewater when doing an end 2 end cycle a couple of years ago and had a test ride on a Thorn Raven with a rohloff hub

    I want one
