    I'n not a world champion

I got a last minute call from my friend Ricky to be on his shop's four man townie team for the 24 Hours in the Sage last weekend. I can't say no to Ricky - especially if it's to ride or ski so I accepted. It's also a lot of fun.
This race has positioned it's self as the world championship 24 Hour townie competition. For those not familiar with the term, townies or town bikes are cruiser-style bikes people use to get around town, but generally not to mountain bike. I've done it as a member of the winning singlespeed team the last two years, and last year with two guys who were on this team so the outlook was good.
But fate was not on our side. A couple of mechanicals put us 20 Minutes behind the winning team who came over the divide from Salida. So we have a plan to get that elusive title for next year, which will include carrying the appropriate tools to change a flat on our townie.
But second place wasn't too bad either. I had to ride a lap standing up due to a bent seat post but I did win a $10 gift certificate to my favorite sandwich shop, so I've got that going for me, which is nice.
Here's a few photos from the madness and a pitch for the event. It's fun! They even made dogs, brats, and pancakes and sausage for everyone. Free! And there was free beer too. That's my kind of race! For more on this check out my site or the event's official site.

The streamers were definitely a big hit. As was the stereo, especially when passing more serious racers on expensive FS rigs! Big Smile

You sign up right here: 24Hours In the Sage See ya there next year, eh?

The other bikes in the background of the first shot don't look very townie to me. Was there a bit of 'wide interpretation' of the rules going on? Did the winning team have full-on, up to date XC bikes? Are Matt's team the actually moral victors in this event?

Certainly looks like fun was had!

We entered in the townie class, but there were open and singlespeed classes as well as townie (in various gender, solo, and/or team size configurations). I've raced the singlespeed class the last two years and this was my first in the townie class. I'm de-evolving! Cool

It was definitely fun, with this year being the most fun yet!

Looks like fun. I'm loving the frame you chose, and especially the streamers & stereo!

Just saw this post and I've gotta say that's wicked cool. It looks like the townie experience is very much alive in Colorado.

I have a Breezer cruiser that I had a lot of fun racing in the Downieville Classic Cruiser Cup when that race was still around. If I ever get free time to hit the trails again I might have to look you guys up.

I just saw this photo of your truly during the first lap. This was one of the more technical sections, so I was just trying not to kill myself when this was taken.
