My wife rides a OnOne Inbred from time to time. I got it for her on our 10th wedding anniversary. No photos handy but she does look pretty good on it. Smile

    Re: Lady singlespeeders?

Hey, that's cheating! Shanaze and Victoria don't count. BMX and track sprinting are not singlespeed. Riding 'from ime to time' doesn't count either.

No, I mean girls who regularly ride on the road or mountain biking - with a single freewheel. Where are the lady singlespeeders?

    Re: Lady singlespeeders?

I agree that we were cheating, Shanaze and Victoria don't use this forum (yet?), but in what way is BMX and track cycling not single speed?

    Re: Lady singlespeeders?

Well, track cycling is not singlespeed because it's fixed - and fixed is a completely different bag of fish that has a zillion other websites and forums that are solely dedicated to fixed, and wouldn't want to know about anything that involved a freewheel. Fixed doesn't count.

BMX is, I suppose, singlespeed (being done with a single freewheel), but it's not really 'cycling', is it? I'm a big fan of BMX, and used to race in the early eighties myself, but it probably doesn't relate too closely to the type of riding that most viewers of this site are involved in. And, we certainly can't include all those hoody teenagers on scruffy little bikes down the town as singlespeeders. BMX doesn't count.

Ladies who go mountain biking, or ride on the road - as 'cyclists' or cycling enthusiasts - with a single freewheel bike, are what I had in mind when I asked the question. So, it would seem that we have yet to find any real lady singlespeeders.

    Re: Lady singlespeeders?

Aaahh I feel a taxonomy coming on ... Devil

Sheldon Brown classes Fixed Gear (FG) and Single Speed (SS) as separate categories, Wikipedia sees FG as a subset of SS. I'm with Wikipedia on this one (although I have the greatest respect for Mr Brown's opinions).

                                                                   SS

                        +------------------------------------------+------------------------------------+
                      FG                                                                        Freewheel (FW)

       +---------------+---------+                                                     +-------------+------------+-------------+---------+

Track                   Road                                                MTB         BMX        Cruiser         CX?      Road

Does it matter .... probably not - but then most things that are fun don't - no harm in a bit of jolly banter Smile

Let's hear some other opinions - are you in the exclusive DP / Brown club or the inclusive Threespeed / Wikipedia one?

All very off topic - the question still stands: Are there any ladies out there that do FW - MTB or FW - Road ... and if so, why do they not frequent this forum?

    Re: Lady singlespeeders?

Is a taxonomy like a hackney carriage but with lower charges?  Party!!!

Whatever, there seems to be a tangible distinction, in all cultures, between fixed and freewheel. They are closely related, obviously - but a gulf exists between them. I see it a bit like siblings who fell out and refuse to communicate with each other. The 'fixed community' does not seem at all tolerant of the idea of freewheels - or brakes these days!

It doesn't really matter, but it's always good to discuss and share opinions. Now then, where are those ladies?!!!

Fantastic - at last! And a proper one; not track or BMX racing, and not in a silly frock.
