    Clipped in or Flatties.

What do people here generally ride with, flat pedals or clipped in? My new (to me) SS came with time clipless pedals. I've replaced them with a pair of flatties from my 'big box of bits' mainly because my cycling shoes have SPD cleats installed and don't live at my house (don't ask) so I'll need to get some new shoes for the time cleats.

I figure that riding clipped in should help with climbs and had the added advantage of giving my riding mates a good laugh when I manage to faceplant still attached to the bike.

Oh and any opinion of time vs shimano SPD?

Do you SS clipped in or with flatties?

    Re: Clipped in or Flatties.

Clipped in is definately the most efficient way to go for xc purposes.  I love Time pedals.  good all weather (even snow and ice) and durable.  I hate Shimano in general as a rule.  (I can't help it, they are like microsoft, or Martha Stewart).

1/2 the time I ride flats though.  On my #1 bike, which is my SS, I normally ride flats.  I love to hop on it and go for a rip at a moments notice, without worrying about what shoes I am wearing.  I don't mind doing long rides on them.  And flats come in a wide variety of cool colours and shapes.  Pedals are my favorite bike jewelery.  you just have to look to the BMX world for variety.  Us MTBers are a boring bunch when it comes to colour.

My vintage commuter is the only bike I ride regularly that doesn't have clipless pedals. I've been almost exclusively running Time ATAC pedals for quite a few years now. I love them. I actually just got my first non-Time pedals for my road bike. I got Crank Bros Candies on the recommendation of a friend. And they are cheaper than Time road pedals, otherwise I might have given them a shot.

So in short, the Times should be good. I think they may have made some mediocre pedals at some point, but most are great.

    Re: Clipped in or Flatties.

I've got flats on my BMX bike - and the scars to prove it! My old bike (1930s and 40s clubman's lightweights) have clips and straps - which are OK. I like the XTR SPDs for singlespeeding.

It's got to be clipless for XC - and being able to pull up hard on the backstroke is a big advantage when disappearing under the gear on a steep climb. it's not just the efficiency of the pedal stroke with clipless - I like the feeling of control that can only be experienced when you're attached to the bike. Shimano SPDs have just the right amount of float for me. It's definately there, but not excessive.

I have flats on SS due to reasons mentioned by Hardly Core - ride it with the kids, down to the shop etc.

    SPDs for geared bike.

    Re: Clipped in or Flatties.

I have a pair of Time ATAC-Z on my commuter and i couldn't be happier with them, they work great in slop, ice, and mud. And if your just hopping on the bike to take a quick ride with friends the wider platforms give you something to stand on. its not ideal, but its not that bad.

    Re: Clipped in or Flatties.

clipped in always, even on my stair jumper; Urban Assault Vehicle

increased vertical control over front and rear of the bike gives so much more finesse on the track street or mall

i can get out of my Time pedals quicker than thinking about doing it

THESE are the pedals you don't want to slip off:

    Re: Clipped in or Flatties.

I'm currently using a pair of Black Widows pedals as well.  It is really difficult to slip off them even when my shoes are soaked and muddy.  But, I gently walked my shin into one of them and they chewed into me good.

I'm willing to sacrifice shin safety in the name of "holy shit those are cool"!

    Re: Clipped in or Flatties.

I have the shimano clips on all my bikes except the commuter - I have the pedals with flats on one side and clips on the other so I can wear regular shoes when I ride to work

the alloy Syncros are just as cool as the stainless IMHO.  Y Sixty makes a similar pedal for a lot less as well.
